COLOUR TO MONOCHROME CONVERSIONS

Note: This tutorial was updated in July 2016
This tutorial explains several different methods for converting colour images to monochrome. The most basic methods are possible in any image editor. Some of the more advanced methods are possible only in sophisticated image editors such as Photoshop. The most important thing to learn from this tutorial is that producing good monochrome images requires an understanding of how to control colour and contrast.
You can scroll through the tutorial in the window below (using the scroll wheel on your mouse). Clicking on the icon at the bottom right of the window will display a larger version. A feedback form is available if you scroll below the tutorial.
